ESJF survey work covered by Radio Free Europe Moldova
ESJF’s work surveying 150 Jewish cemetery sites in the Republic of Moldova has been covered in a short documentary by journalist Eugenia Creţu for Radio Free Europe Moldova.
The news item, titled “Salvarea de uitare” (“Saving from oblivion”), is part of the channel’s series “Pur și simplu” (“Simply”) and follows one ESJF survey team with Moldovan national coordinator Irina Shikova. The documentary offers an insight into ESJF’s work surveying and mapping the Jewish cemeteries sites in the larger context of preserving Moldova’s cultural heritage. It also emphasises the importance of interaction with local institutions and actors, such as historical museums, and authorities on the ground, to involve local actors in ESJF’s long-term goals.
Moldova, as one of the countries with the highest density of Jewish cemeteries worldwide, has many sites that are threatened or endangered by various factors, for example agricultural usage or neglect. However, a number of civil society initiatives, are working hard to protect the country’s Jewish heritage. ESJF is proud to offer its own contribution in doing so.
